You Can Use Your Pickup Truck to Tow a Trailer...
Trailer towing capacity, trailer towing equipment, utility trailer towing
Your pickup truck can come in handy not only for driving around, but
also for towing stuff; especially if it is a trailer that you wish to
transfer to some specific place. Now, this may seem like a very easy job
to do, but some amount of prep-work is always advisable. These suggestions
should therefore come in handy—
(1) Everything comes with a manual, and so also your pickup truck. Do
peruse it thoroughly. It will give you important information such as the
carrying capacity of your truck, its maximum load limit, and what has
to be borne in mind when using it for towing purposes.
(2) Considering that there are varied hitches available for different
trailers, you need to make sure that you have the right hitch to attach
to the trailer that you want to tow. For instance, you have the gooseneck
trailer hitches, fifth wheel trailer hitches, Class-1 trailer hitches,
Class-5 trailer hitches, and so on.
(3) Before you connect your trailer’s tongue to the trailer ball, apply
a surface coating of grease on to the trailer ball.
(4) Once they are connected, the trailer tongue is to be latched or locked
securely on the hitch ball. There should be no extra gap or looseness
in between.
(5) Now it is time to check that the safety chains between the trailer
and your vehicle are secure.
(6) Strong tires will carry you to your destination safely—so see that
the lug nuts are tightly in place and there is good air pressure in all
the tires (trailer and tow truck). Your manual will guide you properly,
concerning specifications.
(7) Your rearview mirrors should enable you to view the sides of the
trailer as well as your pickup truck. As a matter of fact, pointing the
mirrors down to some extent will even allow you see your tires and the
pavement lines properly—are they in alignment? What is very important
is that you are able to see the vehicles coming up behind you and alongside.
In case one mirror is not sufficient, get different ones for different
functions.
(8) Now for the wiring—the connections should allow all the lights to
function. The wiring is also responsible for the working of the electric
trailer brakes.
(9) There is a special device that is available for trailers which have
electric brakes. This allows the brakes to come into force as soon as
the trailer and pickup truck separate, thus preventing accidents. There
is a small cable responsible for pulling the lever that is attached to
the trailer-mounted brake unit. The cable is connected to the tow vehicle
too. Ensure that this device is in working condition, if you have it.
Therefore, take the necessary precautions, and you will face no problems!
